Africa has the largest share of extreme poverty rates globally, with 23 of the world’s poorest 28 countries at extreme poverty rates above 30%. This has resulted in Africa becoming one of the poorest continent on Earth.

The competition is not particularly close. Economic insecurity, political instability and corruption, civil wars, and terrorist insurrections have left millions of Africans living in abject poverty.

Poverty in Africa is the lack of provision to satisfy the basic human needs of certain people in Africa. African nations typically fall toward the bottom of any list measuring small size economic activity, such as income per capita or GDP per capita, despite a wealth of natural resources.

What are the Causes of Poverty in Africa? Lack of shelter, Limited access to clean water resources, Food insecurity, Lack of access to health care, Government corruption, Poor infrastructure, Limited or dwindling natural resources.

Burundi is known as “ The Heart of Africa” because of its shape and location within the continent. Hospitality was once very important in Burundi. In the past, when people went on a journey, they would stop when they were tired or when night fell at any home.

Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world with more than 70 percent of the population living in poverty. Food insecurity levels are alarming with 52 percent of children under 5 stunted and even higher levels of malnutrition among rural communities. Burundi is Ranked first poorest country in the world, it fell to the poorest in 2015 and has remained there ever since.

2. Central African Republic

Central African Republic

The Central African Republic remains one of the poorest countries in the world and is grappling with numerous human capital challenges. It is ranked the second poorest Countries in Africa after burundi. It is one of the world’s least-developed countries, with over 60 percent of its population living in poverty. The country does have some important natural resources, with timber and diamonds dominating exports.

Causes of poverty in Central African Republic include poor agricultural and geographic conditions and an expensive, poorly-constructed medical system. Agriculture is an extensive source of stress, making it one of the larger causes of poverty in Central African Republic.

3. Somalia

Somalia

Somalia was one of the richest countries in the world in 2018. It has considerable oil and gas reserves including the longest coastline in Africa (3000km) giving it access to vast marine, but currently Nearly 69% Somalis live in poverty, making Somalia one of the poorest countries in Sub-saharan Africa. About 69 percent of the population lived in poverty in 2019.

4. Niger Republic

Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world. It is a nation that suffers from multiple droughts and few arable areas, placing it among the poorest countries in the world.Niger fell victim to a series of coups and political instability following its independence from France in 1960.

Today the country struggles in the face of frequent droughts, insurgency and wide-spread poverty. Niger is betting on increased oil exploration and gold mining to help modernize its economy. Niger is ranked number three poorest countries in Africa because they based largely on subsistence crops, livestock, and some of the world’s largest uranium deposits.

5. Malawi

Malawi

Malawi, a landlocked country in southeastern Africa, is defined by its topography of highlands split by the Great Rift Valley and enormous Lake Malawi. Malawi remains one of the poorest countries in the world despite making significant economic and structural reforms to sustain economic growth.

The economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, employing nearly 80% of the population, and it is vulnerable to external shocks, particularly climatic shocks. In Malawi Over half the population lives in poverty, and one-fifth in extreme poverty. Access to clean water, sanitation, and health care remain significant challenges for many Malawians, especially in rural areas.

Mozambique was one of the poorest countries in the world, with poverty estimated to reach 80% of the total population. Mozambique has high risk associated with corruption, which is pervasive problem in the country. The country also fares poorly on Financial Transparency and Standards. Mozambique is listed among the US INCSR list of major money laundering countries.

As more and more women in Mozambique become the heads of their households and have limited access to land, their situation escalates. Liberia is among the world’s poorest countries.Poverty in Liberia remains widespread, with more than half of the population 50.9 percent below the national poverty line, according to the 2016 Household Income and Expenditure Survey. This translates into roughly 2.3 million Liberians who were unable to meet their basic needs.

The economy of Liberia is extremely underdeveloped, with only $3.222 billion by gross domestic product as of 2019. A lack of infrastructure and trained human resources, compounded by the aftermath of civil war and Ebola, are the main issues.

Sudan is reputed to have great mineral resources, and exploration has started extensively for gold, of which is produced nearly 30 tons annually providing a great boost to the foreign exchange reserves of the nation, with the participation of many investment companies from all over the world. South Sudan is highly prone and vulnerable to climate-related shocks that have devastating impacts on people’s welfare.

Since independence in 2011, the country has suffered severe droughts and floods, severely impacting the country’s development efforts. South Sudan is one of the poorest countries in the world. Two-thirds of its population is dependent on humanitarian aid.

9. Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is one of the few of the poorest countries in Africa that has a higher GNI than GDP. Sierra Leone is a small but densely populated country on the North Atlantic coast of West Africa, ranked 181 out of 189 countries in the 2019 Human Development Index. Poverty levels are high, with 53 percent of the population living below the income poverty line.

Experts believe that four primary factors contribute to Sierra Leone’s overwhelming levels of poverty: government corruption, a lack of an established education system, absence of civil rights and poor infrastructure.

10. Madagascar

Madagascar

Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in Africa. Over 2 million people in Madagascar are in danger of imminent starvation due to a prolonged drought. Relative bright spots in Madagascar’s economy include its nickel mines, textile production and fisheries.

Madagascar which was ranked as one of the most spectacular centers of biodiversity and 90 percent of its wildlife found nowhere else on the planet now has vast areas of complete destruction of the landscape from drought and fires.

What is the biggest problem in Madagascar?The loss of habitat due to deforestation is the biggest single threat to Madagascar’s wildlife. Although the exact extent of forest loss is not known with certainty, only 10 percent of Madagascar’s forests remain.
