Early life
Samuel Chukwueze was born in a Nigeria town of Amaokwe Ugba Ibeku in the state of Abia. He is of Igbo ancestry and was raised in a Christian household with a younger brother and sister. He went to Evangel Secondary School and Government College Umuahia. He began playing football at the age of eight, and as a child, he looked up to Jay-Jay Okocha as his football idol. As he stated in an earlier interview, he was mentored by Hon. Victor Apugo, whom he saw as a father.
Career
Chukwueze made his senior debut on May 20, 2018, when he scored his team’s second goal in a 3–1 away win over Bilbao Athletic. During his first season, he scored two goals in 11 appearances as his team narrowly missed out on promotion in the play-offs.
For the 2018–19 UEFA Europa League season, Chukwueze made his first-team debut on September 20, 2018, in a 2–2 home draw against Rangers, replacing Nicola Sansone. For the 2018–19 La Liga season, he also made his competitive debut on 5 November 2018, playing a 90-minute full match in a 1–1 home draw against Levante.
He was named the Nigeria Football Federation’s 2018 Young Player of the Year in April 2019.
In October 2018, he was called up to the senior team for the first time after playing for Nigeria at the under-17 level. On November 20, 2018, he made his senior squad debut as a starter in a 0–0 friendly draw against Uganda.
Chukwueze was selected to play for Nigeria’s senior squad at the Africa Cup of Nations in May 2019 as well as the Under-20 team at the Under-20 World Cup. Villarreal, on the other hand, stated that he could only participate in one of the tournaments. He eventually elected to join Nigeria’s senior squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in Egypt, and scored his first senior goal in Nigeria’s 2–1 quarter-final victory over South Africa.
